- The AHCI driver is for the storage controller, not the drive itself. Since Windows 7 is fairly new, it's a safe bet that it will have AHCI drivers for all but the very latest equipment. It's not necessary to install the AHCI driver prior to installing Windows unless Windows Setup requires it to proceed.

How can I now install the AHCI Driver so that I boot using AHCI mode going forward. My mainboard is a Intel DH67BL. I ran into the same problem while trying to do a fresh install of Windows 10 after having successfully upgraded a Win 7 system already in AHCI mode (1155 Gigabyte motherboard).

I installed Win7 on a new SSD drive with my BIOS set to IDE mode. Win7 installed fine and runs OK. But when I do the registry fix described in KB922976 and reset my BIOS to AHCI my system goes into a BIOS loop and windows fails to load. In other words, it fails to load the AHCI driver and thus cannot start.
The only way I can get my system to run is to set the BIOS to IDE mode. But this results in Device Manager showing yellow exclamation points next to my ATA Channel 0 and and IDE Channel controllers. Even with these the system runs fine.
Update Driverdoes not load the AHCI driver; it simply says the best driver is already loaded. Setting BIOS to AHCI and running Repair System from the Win7 DVD does not find a problem and therefore changes nothing. The Win7 error scan finds a problem with the ATA and IDE controllers but fails to fix them - it says the driver loaded incorrectly.
My motherboard is ASUS P6T and I have read other posts from people who have had the KB922976 fix work on their systems. So there must be something that is preventing my Win7 from loading the AHCI driver. But what could i tbe?
