We searched, tested and compiled a list that covers some of the best Free Reverb plugins for both Windows and MAC OS (with few exceptions). Do not confuse this list with a top, their position in the list is purely random.

Reverb plugins reproduce the ambience of an imaginary room or space and they have many musically useful characteristics. Usually, the reverb effect is often used, but in small amounts because if it’s used in excess, the end result will sound rather strange, and you do not want that in your final mix. Ambience (by Smartelectronix)

Ambience free reverb plugin is so good that rivals many commercial plugins. Ambience includes some unusual functions such as a “Gater” and a useful Hold function. It comes with a great collection of useful presets (Dry, Wet, Time, Size, Pre-Delay, and Width). Functions like “Quality” allows you to trade off reverb quality for CPU usage and the “Variation” button creates a new variant of the same room.

TAL-Reverb-4 developed by TAL is the latest free reverb plugin, extracted from the TAL-Sampler, now available as a standalone effect plugin.

Mo’ Verb is a free reverberator plugin, based on original algorithms and simulates digital and spring reverbs. Mo’ Verb features an optimized design for maximum smoothness of reverb sounds, a filter for “wall reflection”, independent Early and Late reflection EQs. It also includes a built-in stereo imager, a gate and a goniometer and over 40 presets to use.

KR-Reverb FS developed by KResearch is based on their Reverb processor found on the commercial KR-Space’s reverberation module. KR-Reverb FS is an easy to use effect plugin to adjust the equalization and damping controls to optimal levels and get a warm reverb sound, perfectly suitable for a wide range of applications.

Lexicon Reverb Unit

MuVerb (by MuTools)

MuVerb free plugin effect developed by MuTools, is a versatile nice standalone Reverb from Mu-Lab application, available only for Windows users. MuVerb features some useful controls such as Decay, Damping, Wet/Dry, PreDly, Amp, Speed, and two filters Filter F and Filter Q.

Unfortunately, this reverb plugin is not available for Mac, but Windows users can download and use the MuVerb plugin from the link below. Also, an audio demo is available on the official page.

DRX8R is a hybrid plugin including a reverb and a compressor module, designed primarily for drums, but that can be used on any audio source. The strength of this plugin is the CPU low consumption and the Compressor unit, so you will get two useful plugins in one.

For beginners (do not be ashamed, we all were like you), here is how you can install plugins on your computer:

Most of these freeware plugins are quite easily to install on Windows systems. Just unzip the .zip/.rar file and copy the .dll file or entire folder to your main “VST Plugins” folder (most often it can be found in Program Files). On MAC computers, the installation process is also very simple, locate on your Macintosh HDD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components and copy/paste (drag) the .dmg file there. After you’ve done this, open your music software (DAW) and refresh the effects plugins list, if the new plugin does not appear automatically.
